"Rediscovering Myself Through the Lens
As women, we often find ourselves lost in the roles we play—mother, wife, caregiver. We give so much of ourselves to those we love that, somewhere along the way, we forget to see ourselves.
For years, my focus has been on raising my children, being a wife, work and now caring for aging parents. It’s a privilege, but in the process, I rarely stopped to think about me. Who am I outside of these roles? Do I still matter in my own right? Do I still feel beautiful, strong, and seen?
That’s where Marlene at Painted Light came in.
I stepped into her studio feeling a bit nervous, unsure, and vulnerable. A photo-shoot was not something I did for myself. But Marlene has a way of making you feel like you belong exactly as you are. With her warm encouragement and expert eye, she helped me see something I had long forgotten—I am still me.
Through her lens, I wasn’t just a mother, wife, or a caregiver. I was a woman—confident, beautiful, and comfortable in my own skin. I saw myself as others see me, not just in the roles I play but in my own right. It was a powerful, emotional experience.
This shoot wasn’t just about photographs. It was about seeing myself again. And for any woman who has ever felt lost in the background of her own life, I encourage you—step out, embrace yourself, and remember that you are so much more than the roles you fill. You are you, and you are worth celebrating.
Thank you, Marlene, for reminding me of that."
Why Visibility Matters
Women over 50 hold a wealth of experience. We have built careers, raised families, overcome hardships, and discovered our own identities. Yet, mainstream media and expectations from society often sideline us, making us believe that beauty and vitality have an expiration date.
For many, life follows a familiar rhythm. Years are devoted to raising children, building a home, nurturing everyone else. Then suddenly, the kids are grown, the house is quieter, and a woman is left asking: Where do I go from here? Who even am I now? What is my role? What do I want to be when I grow up? Wait. . . I AM GROWN UP???!!! HELLLLLP!
It can be a deeply disorienting time—but also one full of possibility.
Visibility is about more than just being seen—it’s about being recognized, valued, and celebrated. When women see others like themselves represented in photography, media, and art, it fosters confidence and a renewed sense of self-worth. It reminds them (and the world) that they are still vibrant, relevant, and absolutely stunning.
And sometimes, all it takes to reignite that inner spark is someone in your corner—someone to see you, to cheer you on, and to remind you of everything you still are and everything you still have yet to become. Remember, life is not over when the nest is empty, we are JUST STARTING my friend!! An entirely new chapter!!
The Impact of The Story of a Woman
Since launching this project, I’ve had the privilege of photographing remarkable women who have shared their personal journeys—stories of reinvention, overcoming challenges, and embracing the beauty of aging. Each session is more than just a photoshoot; it’s an empowering experience that helps women see themselves in a new light. But we need more of you! I know you're out there!
At the end of this project, I will be creating a print magazine featuring the stories and portraits of these inspiring women. Additionally, I will be hosting a meet-and-greet event where all participants can come together, share their experiences, and celebrate one another.
How You Can Be Part of It
If you are a woman over 50 (or know someone who is) and want to be part of this transformative project, I would love to hear from you. Your story is valuable. Your presence matters. And you deserve to be seen.
Let’s change the narrative together. Let’s show the world that beauty, confidence, and empowerment do not fade with age—they flourish.
